Overview

Ariyalur is a district in the Cauvery delta region of central Tamil Nadu, carved out of Perambalur district on 23 November 2007. It covers about 1,940 sq km and had a population of 754,894 at the 2011 Census, one of the smallest in the state. The district is best known as Tamil Nadu's cement heartland and for its rich fossil beds, which have yielded prehistoric marine and dinosaur-era remains. Historically it lay within the Chola heartland, with the great capital of Gangaikonda Cholapuram inside its borders. Its literacy rate of 71.34% (2011) was among the lowest in Tamil Nadu.

Economy

Ariyalur's economy rests on cement manufacturing, mining and agriculture. Its limestone reserves support several large cement plants, making it one of the biggest cement-producing zones in Tamil Nadu, while lignite deposits around Jayankondam add to its mineral base. Paddy and sugarcane dominate agriculture, aided by the district's status within the Cauvery delta Protected Special Agricultural Zone. Sugar mills and agro-processing units provide additional rural employment. With a 2011 population of 754,894 and a literacy rate of 71.34%, the district remains largely rural and agrarian.

Tourism

Tourism in Ariyalur centres on its Chola-era heritage and natural sites. The UNESCO-listed Brihadisvara Temple at Gangaikonda Cholapuram, built by Rajendra Chola I around 1025 CE, is the district's foremost attraction. The Karaivetti Bird Sanctuary, one of Tamil Nadu's larger wetlands, draws migratory waterfowl and birdwatchers in the winter months. Fossil-rich sites around Ariyalur also attract geology students and researchers.

Temples & heritage

The Brihadisvara (Gangaikondacholeeswarar) Temple at Gangaikonda Cholapuram is a magnificent 11th-century Chola monument and part of the 'Great Living Chola Temples' UNESCO World Heritage grouping. Built by Rajendra Chola I to mark his conquests up to the Ganges, it is celebrated for its towering vimana and fine sculpture. Numerous village temples across the district reflect its deep Chola-period roots.

Infrastructure

Ariyalur lies on the Tiruchirappalli-Chennai rail and road corridor, giving it reasonable connectivity to central Tamil Nadu. The cement industry has spurred freight rail sidings, quarries and heavy-vehicle road networks. The nearest major airport is at Tiruchirappalli.

Education & healthcare

Educationally, Ariyalur is a developing district; its 2011 literacy rate of 71.34% was among the lowest in Tamil Nadu, prompting state focus on school enrolment. It is served by government arts and science colleges, polytechnic and engineering institutions, and a government medical college established to improve local healthcare and medical education.
