Overview

Chengalpattu is a coastal district in northern Tamil Nadu, formed on 29 November 2019 by splitting the parent Kancheepuram district. Covering about 2,945 sq km along the Bay of Bengal, it stretches from the southern fringe of Chennai down the Coromandel Coast. The district is a major industrial corridor, home to automobile plants, IT special economic zones and the historic port town of Mamallapuram (Mahabalipuram). Because it was created after 2011, it was not separately enumerated in that Census. Its headquarters, Chengalpattu town, is an important road and rail junction south of Chennai.

Economy

Chengalpattu has one of Tamil Nadu's most dynamic industrial economies, anchored by the Sriperumbudur-Oragadam-Maraimalai Nagar manufacturing belt. Automobile and electronics majors operate large plants here, supported by SEZs and SIPCOT industrial parks along the GST Road and OMR IT corridor. Tourism around the UNESCO World Heritage monuments of Mamallapuram is a significant earner, while agriculture and fishing sustain the coastal and inland rural areas. The district benefits from its proximity to Chennai city and port, making it a preferred destination for investment.

Tourism

Chengalpattu is one of Tamil Nadu's premier tourism destinations, thanks to Mamallapuram (Mahabalipuram), a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its 7th-8th century Pallava rock-cut monuments. The Shore Temple, Pancha Rathas (Five Rathas) and the giant bas-relief 'Descent of the Ganges' (Arjuna's Penance) draw visitors from around the world. The coast also offers beach resorts, the Madras Crocodile Bank and the Muttukadu backwaters. Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary, one of India's oldest, lies within the district.

Temples & heritage

The Shore Temple at Mamallapuram, built during the reign of Narasimhavarman II (Rajasimha) in the early 8th century, is the district's iconic monument and among the oldest structural stone temples in South India. The rock-cut Pancha Rathas and numerous cave temples (mandapas) showcase early Pallava architecture. Inland, ancient Shiva and Vishnu temples dot towns such as Tirukalukundram and Thirupporur.

Infrastructure

Chengalpattu is exceptionally well connected, straddling the National Highway (GST Road) and the Chennai-Villupuram rail line, with the OMR (Rajiv Gandhi Salai) IT corridor and the East Coast Road running through it. Chennai International Airport lies just to the north, and Chennai and Kamarajar ports serve the district's industries. A major government medical college and hospital operate at Chengalpattu town.

Education & healthcare

The district hosts numerous engineering colleges, IT training institutions and universities clustered along the OMR corridor, reflecting its role in the Chennai metropolitan education belt. The Chengalpattu Medical College, one of Tamil Nadu's older medical institutions, provides medical education and healthcare. Proximity to Chennai gives students access to a wide range of higher-education options.
