Cuddalore
Headquarters: Cuddalore
Overview
Cuddalore is a coastal district on the Coromandel Coast of northern Tamil Nadu, formed on 30 September 1993 from the erstwhile South Arcot district. It covers about 3,703 sq km and had a population of 2,605,914 at the 2011 Census, with a literacy rate of 78.04%. The district town of Cuddalore has a long trading history and was an important port during the colonial period. It combines a fertile agricultural hinterland with major petrochemical industry and the temple town of Chidambaram. The district lies partly within the Cauvery delta agricultural zone.
Economy
Cuddalore's economy blends agriculture, chemicals and fishing. The SIPCOT industrial estate at Cuddalore is one of Tamil Nadu's major chemical and petrochemical hubs, hosting numerous chemical, pharmaceutical and fertilizer units. Agriculture is dominated by cashew, sugarcane and paddy, supported by sugar mills, while the district's long coastline sustains a large marine fishing sector. With a 2011 population of about 2.61 million and 78.04% literacy, its economy balances heavy industry with a rural agrarian base.
Tourism
Cuddalore offers a mix of religious, natural and beach tourism. Chidambaram, home to the famous Thillai Nataraja Temple, is the district's leading pilgrimage destination. The Pichavaram mangrove forest, one of the largest mangrove ecosystems in the world, is a popular spot for boating and eco-tourism. Silver Beach near Cuddalore town is among the longest beaches on the Coromandel Coast.
Temples & heritage
The Thillai Nataraja Temple at Chidambaram, dedicated to Shiva as Nataraja (the Lord of Dance), is one of the most revered Shaivite temples in Tamil Nadu and celebrated for its golden roof and cosmic-dance iconography. The Pataleeswarar Temple at Tirupapuliyur and other ancient shrines add to the district's religious heritage. Chidambaram is closely linked to the Chola dynasty, who richly endowed the Nataraja temple.
Infrastructure
Cuddalore is served by the Chennai-Cuddalore-Tiruchirappalli rail and road corridors and has a minor port with a fishing harbour. The SIPCOT complex is supported by dedicated industrial infrastructure. The nearest airport is at Puducherry, with Chennai airport also within reach.
Education & healthcare
The district has a growing network of arts, science, engineering and polytechnic colleges, and Annamalai University at Chidambaram is one of the oldest and largest unitary residential universities in India. Cuddalore's 2011 literacy rate stood at 78.04%. Annamalai University in particular draws students from across the state and beyond.
