Western Tamil Nadu
Erode
Headquarters: Erode
Overview
Erode is a district in the Kongu Nadu region of western Tamil Nadu, with the city of Erode on the banks of the Cauvery as its headquarters. Formed in 1979 (originally as Periyar district) out of Coimbatore, it recorded a population of 2,251,744 at the 2011 Census across an area of about 5,760 sq km, with an effective literacy rate of 72.58%. The district straddles the Bhavani, Cauvery and Noyyal rivers and is known nationally as a hub for turmeric trade and handloom textiles. Erode city is popularly called the 'Turmeric City' and the 'Loom City' of India.
Economy
Erode's economy rests on agriculture and textiles: the city hosts one of India's largest regulated turmeric markets, and handloom and powerloom weaving centres at Erode, Chennimalai and Gobichettipalayam produce cotton sarees, bed-spreads, towels and furnishing fabrics for export. Turmeric and chillies dominate the district's condiment output, while groundnut leads its oilseeds and rice milling operates from Erode, Bhavani and Perundurai. The Lower Bhavani Project (Bhavanisagar) reservoir underpins irrigation across the district. Major exports include handloom products, dairy, raw cotton and rice.
Tourism
The Bhavanisagar (Lower Bhavani) Dam with its reservoir and gardens is among the district's most visited spots, and the surrounding Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve in the Western Ghats offers wildlife and forest landscapes. Kodiveri Dam on the Bhavani river and the Thindal Murugan Temple hill near Erode city draw local pilgrims and day-trippers. The riverside town of Bhavani, at the sacred confluence (Kooduthurai) of the Bhavani and Cauvery, is a noted pilgrimage centre.
Temples & heritage
The Arulmigu Sangameswarar Temple at Bhavani, standing at the 'Triveni Sangam' confluence of the Bhavani and Cauvery, is the district's best-known shrine, revered as a southern (Dakshina) Triveni. The Thindal Murugan Temple, set atop a hillock on the outskirts of Erode, is a major Lord Murugan pilgrimage site. The Chennimalai Murugan Temple, reached by a long flight of steps, is another important hill shrine in the district.
Infrastructure
Erode Junction is a major railway hub on the Chennai–Coimbatore–Salem lines, and the district is served by National Highways including the Salem–Kochi (NH-544) corridor. Perundurai hosts a large SIPCOT industrial estate and growth centre. The Bhavanisagar and Kodiveri systems supply irrigation and drinking water across the region.
Education & healthcare
Erode's institutions include the Government Erode Medical College at Perundurai and the IRT Perundurai Medical College, along with well-regarded engineering colleges such as Kongu Engineering College and the Bannari Amman Institute of Technology in Sathyamangalam. The district's colleges are largely affiliated to Bharathiar University and Anna University.
