Ambasamudram Choppu Saman

Ambasamudram Choppu Saman are the miniature wooden toy kitchen utensils hand-turned by artisans of Ambasamudram in Tirunelveli district, made as children's play sets that mimic a real Tamil kitchen. Small pots, pans, ladles, grinding stones and cooking vessels are turned and carved from soft wood on simple lathes, then smoothed and sometimes painted in bright colours to delight children at play. The craft grew from the region's woodworking skills and the age-old tradition of giving little girls play kitchens to imitate household chores, and choppu sets are given as gifts and used in the pretend-cooking games beloved by generations. Each tiny piece must be turned with care to keep the correct proportions of a real vessel in miniature. The tradition supports the toy-making artisan families of Ambasamudram and preserves a charming piece of Tamil childhood and folk craft.
