About this product

Arumbavur wood carvings are sculptural works made by artisans of Arumbavur in Perambalur district, carved mainly from softwoods such as lingam wood and neem into idols, temple pieces and decorative figures. Using chisels and gouges, the carvers shape deities, dwarapalakas, ornate doorframes and life-size figures, prized for their smooth finish and expressive detailing. The craft grew from the region's supply of suitable timber and the demand for temple and ritual woodwork, and Arumbavur pieces are supplied to temples, mutts and homes across Tamil Nadu and beyond. Larger commissions can take skilled artisans many weeks of patient carving to complete. The tradition supports a cluster of woodcarving families in and around Arumbavur and preserves an important strand of Tamil temple woodcraft.
