About this product

Authoor Vetrilai is the betel leaf grown in the Authoor region along the Thamirabarani river in Thoothukudi district, prized for its mild pungency, tenderness and pleasant aroma. The vines are trained up support poles in shaded, well-watered gardens on the fertile river banks, and the heart-shaped leaves are hand-picked, graded and bundled for sale. The rich alluvial soil and clean river water of the Thamirabarani belt are credited with giving the leaf its characteristic soft texture and balanced taste. Chewed with areca nut and lime as a traditional after-meal digestive and offered on auspicious occasions, betel leaf holds a central place in Tamil social and ritual life. The crop is an important livelihood for the betel-growing families of the region and moves through a busy local trade to markets across the state.
