About this product
Bhavani Jamakkalam is a thick, hard-wearing woven cotton carpet or rug made by the weaving community of Bhavani in Erode district, at the confluence of the Cauvery and Bhavani rivers. Woven on heavy pit looms from strong, dyed cotton yarn, the rug is known for its coarse yet even texture, bright colourfast dyes and the ability to last for decades of daily use. Weaving here is said to have begun some two centuries ago and grew into a large cottage industry, with the durrie prized for floor spreads, prayer mats and bedding. The characteristic bold stripes, checks and geometric borders are set during warping and give each piece its distinctive look. The craft supports a cluster of weaver families and cooperatives, and the Bhavani rug remains a household name across Tamil Nadu for value and durability.
