Chedibutta Saree

A handloom saree woven in the Tirunelveli region featuring the 'chedibutta' plant-and-flower motif on border and pallu.

About this product

The Chedibutta saree is a handloom saree woven in the Tirunelveli region, recognised by its 'chedibutta' motif, a repeating plant-and-flower design worked into the border and pallu. Woven on handlooms, usually in cotton, the saree carries small buttas of creepers, flowering plants and leaves that give it a distinctive, nature-inspired pattern against a plain or contrast ground. The motif is created during weaving using extra-weft or jacquard technique, requiring careful setting so the plant figures repeat neatly across the fabric. The saree belongs to the long weaving tradition of the southern Tamil Nadu belt, where cotton handloom sarees have been made for everyday and festive wear. Woven by weaver families of the region, the Chedibutta saree supports local handloom livelihoods and preserves a distinctive floral design tradition.
