About this product

Madurai Sungudi is a hand-crafted tie-and-dye cotton saree from the temple city of Madurai, famous for its galaxy of tiny dots scattered across a coloured ground. The pattern is created by pinching and knotting the cloth by hand with thread before it is dyed, so that the tied spots resist the colour and remain as bright dots when the knots are opened. The craft is said to have been brought to Madurai by the Saurashtra weaving community who migrated from Gujarat generations ago, blending their bandhani skill with local cotton weaving. Light, airy and well suited to the region's heat, the saree traditionally uses natural dyes and motifs inspired by the sun, moon and temple. Once threatened by cheaper printed imitations, genuine hand-knotted Sungudi is again valued by connoisseurs and sustains the artisan families who keep the labour-intensive technique alive.
