About this product
The Nachiarkoil Kuthuvilakku is a traditional standing brass lamp cast in the temple town of Nachiarkoil near Kumbakonam, made by the local Kammalar (Pathar) metal-smith community using the lost-wax method. Rather than being cast in one piece, the tall lamp is built up from many separately crafted parts, the base, stem, oil holders and crowning finial, each modelled in wax, cast in brass and then fitted, filed and polished together. The design typically rises through decorative tiers to a hamsa (swan) or floral top, and the lamp is lit at temples, homes and ceremonies as an auspicious object. The craft has been practised by these families for generations and is closely tied to the ritual life of the Kumbakonam region. Valued for its graceful proportions and fine finish, the Nachiarkoil lamp sustains a small community of traditional brass artisans.
