Namakkal Makkal Pathirangal
Hand-carved soapstone cookware made in Namakkal, valued for even heat retention and traditional cooking use.
About this product
Namakkal Makkal Pathirangal are the hand-carved soapstone cooking vessels made in Namakkal, valued for their even heat retention and traditional use in slow cooking. Craftsmen quarry soft soapstone (kalchatti stone), then cut and hollow it by hand and turn it on simple lathes to shape pots, pans and serving vessels with thick walls that hold and spread heat gently. Food cooked in these stone vessels is believed to retain more nutrients and gain a distinctive taste, and the pots are traditionally seasoned before first use to make them durable. Namakkal's access to suitable stone and its community of stone-turning artisans made it a centre for this cookware. Prized today both as healthy cookware and as heritage kitchenware, the craft supports stone-working families in the district and preserves an old tradition of stone vessel-making.
