About this product

Nilgiri Orthodox Tea is a high-grown tea produced in the Nilgiri hills of Tamil Nadu and processed by the labour-intensive orthodox method rather than the crush-tear-curl process. Grown on misty slopes at high elevation, the tea bushes yield leaves that are gently withered, rolled, oxidised and fired whole, preserving the delicate flavour and giving a bright, fragrant and briskly aromatic liquor. The Nilgiri tea industry was established in the colonial period and the cool, frost-free climate allows harvesting almost throughout the year, with the finest 'frost teas' picked in winter. Renowned for its clarity and floral, fruity notes, Nilgiri orthodox tea is prized in both domestic and export markets, including for blends and iced teas. The plantations are a mainstay of the hill economy, employing large numbers of workers and small growers across the district.
