About this product

Salem Venpattu is the pure white silk cloth, especially dhotis and angavastrams, woven by the Sourashtra weaving community of Salem. Its defining feature is the flawless, unbleached whiteness of the silk, achieved through careful degumming and weaving of mulberry silk yarn without heavy dyeing, often finished with a fine zari border. The Sourashtras, silk weavers who migrated to Tamil Nadu generations ago, brought their expertise to Salem and made the town a centre for high-quality white silk used at weddings and religious ceremonies. The plain radiant body and delicate golden border give the cloth a dignified, ceremonial appearance favoured for auspicious occasions. The craft sustains the weaving families of Salem and preserves a distinctive tradition of pure white silk that stands apart from the region's coloured silks.
