About this product
Thanjavur Netti Works are delicate decorative models and garlands made from netti, the soft, feather-light pith of the sholapith plant, by artisans of Thanjavur. The spongy white pith is sliced and carved with a knife into fine sheets and shapes, then assembled into intricate models of temple gopurams, garlands, deities, mementoes and the decorative garlands used to adorn idols and Bharatanatyam dancers. Because the material is extremely soft and pure white, it allows very fine, lace-like detailing that is hard to achieve in other media. The craft has long served the temple and wedding culture of the Thanjavur region, where pith garlands and decorations carry ceremonial importance. Practised by a small number of skilled artisan families, netti work is a fragile but distinctive Tamil craft that continues to supply religious and decorative markets.
