About this product

Thanjavur painting is a classical South Indian devotional art form from Thanjavur, celebrated for its rich colours, gold-foil embellishment and gem-like brilliance. Artists first draw the subject, usually Hindu deities such as Krishna, Lakshmi or Rama, on a cloth pasted over a wooden plank, then build up a raised gesso relief and lay pure gold leaf and inset glass beads or semi-precious stones over the ornaments and thrones. The tradition flourished under the patronage of the Maratha rulers of Thanjavur and drew on earlier Nayak and Vijayanagara styles, giving the paintings their frontal, serene and richly framed compositions. The glittering gold, jewelled surface and durable wooden base make each panel a lasting object of worship and prestige, often installed in home shrines. The craft supports skilled artist families in and around Thanjavur and is treasured by collectors as a distinctive Tamil heritage art.
