About this product

The Vellore Spiny Brinjal is a prickly, seed-rich brinjal or eggplant landrace grown in Vellore district, distinctive for the small spines on its stalk and calyx and for its firm, flavourful cooking quality. The plants bear rounded to oval fruits with dense seeds and a robust taste that holds up well in traditional curries and gravies, and the spines are a recognisable mark of this local variety. Long cultivated by farmers in the Vellore region, the brinjal is adapted to the district's soil and climate and is favoured in local cuisine for its texture and taste over commercial hybrids. Because it is a traditional, open-pollinated landrace, farmers save its seed and grow it from their own stock. The crop supports small vegetable-growing families in the district and preserves a piece of Tamil Nadu's agricultural biodiversity.
