Virupakshi Hill Banana

The Virupakshi Hill Banana is a hardy, aromatic banana cultivar grown on the lower slopes of the Palani hills around Virupakshi in Dindigul district. Smaller and firmer than plains bananas, it is famous for its rich fragrance, deep flavour and unusually long shelf life, qualities linked to the cool hill climate and the well-drained soils where it is raised. The variety has been cultivated on the hills for generations using traditional rain-fed methods, and its fruit ripens slowly to a distinctive taste that sets it apart from commercial bananas. It is a key ingredient in Palani panchamirtham, the famous temple prasadam, and is also valued for infant food and health diets. The crop is a mainstay for the hill farmers of the region, though it faces pressure from disease and changing land use, making its protection important for these growers.
