Overview

Kallakurichi is a district in the northern-central part of Tamil Nadu, carved out of the erstwhile Viluppuram (Villupuram) district and inaugurated on 26 November 2019 as the state's 33rd district. It covers 3,530.58 sq km and is a predominantly agrarian region that describes itself as the 'Home of Agriculture'. Because it did not exist as a separate unit at the 2011 Census, no separate Census-2011 population or literacy figure is available for the present district. The Kalvarayan Hills, rising along its western edge, form a distinctive natural landmark.

Economy

The district's economy is overwhelmingly agricultural, built on sugarcane, paddy and groundnut. It hosts two co-operative sugar mills and one private sugar mill, more than ten small and large modern rice-processing units, cashew processing and sago/tapioca units, and numerous poultry farms in and around Kallakurichi town. Textiles, agricultural feeds and a solvent-extraction plant add to the industrial base, while the Gomukhi river and its reservoir support irrigation.

Tourism

The Kalvarayan Hills are the district's tourism centrepiece — an under-explored hill range with waterfalls such as Megam Falls and Periyar Falls, tribal hamlets and cool forest trails. The Gomukhi Dam, with its scenic reservoir and sunsets, is a popular picnic destination. Together these sites make the district a growing weekend-getaway circuit within Tamil Nadu.

Temples & heritage

Kallakurichi and its surrounding taluks are dotted with village temples and hill shrines, several set within the Kalvarayan Hills and worshipped by the local tribal communities. The region historically fell within the temple-rich Villupuram belt, with the great Gingee–Tiruvannamalai temple circuit within easy reach to the north. Ancient Shiva and Amman temples in towns such as Chinnasalem and Sankarapuram serve as local centres of worship.

Infrastructure

Kallakurichi lies on National Highway 79 (Ulundurpet–Salem) and is connected by rail on the Villupuram–Salem line, placing it within the Chennai–Salem road and rail corridor. As a new district headquarters, the town has seen an expansion of administrative offices, a new government medical college and improved road links to Viluppuram and Salem.

Education & healthcare

The Government Medical College, Kallakurichi, with its attached district hospital, is the district's flagship higher-education and healthcare institution. Schooling and college education are otherwise served by government and aided institutions across the taluks, with most arts and science colleges affiliated to Thiruvalluvar University and Annamalai University.
