Overview

The Nilgiris is a hill district in the Western Ghats of Tamil Nadu, with its headquarters at Udhagamandalam (Ooty), the premier hill station of South India. Constituted as a separate district in February 1882, it covers an area of 2,565 sq km and had a population of 735,394 according to the 2011 Census. The district is crowned by Doddabetta (about 2,637 m), the highest peak in the Nilgiris and the second highest in the Western Ghats. It forms the core of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, the first biosphere reserve declared in India (1986), sheltering rich biodiversity across its sholas, grasslands and the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve. The Nilgiris is also the ancestral home of indigenous communities such as the Toda, Badaga, Kota, Kurumba and Irula.

Economy

The economy of the Nilgiris rests firmly on tea, with vast plantations blanketing its slopes and the region's produce marketed as GI-tagged Nilgiri tea, prized for its distinctive aroma. Tourism is a major pillar, drawing lakhs of visitors to Ooty, Coonoor and Kotagiri every year. The cool climate supports thriving temperate horticulture, including carrots, cabbages, potatoes and beetroot, alongside floriculture that feeds the district's famous flower shows. Coffee and spices such as pepper are cultivated in the lower slopes around Gudalur, while dairy farming remains an important supplementary livelihood for the hill communities.

Tourism

Ooty, the "Queen of Hill Stations", anchors the district's tourism with its Government Botanical Garden, the boat-filled Ooty Lake and the annual Summer Festival flower show. The UNESCO World Heritage Nilgiri Mountain Railway, the beloved "toy train", climbs from Mettupalayam through Coonoor to Ooty using a rack-and-pinion system, offering one of India's most scenic rail journeys. Doddabetta peak with its telescope house, Coonoor's Sim's Park and Dolphin's Nose, and the tiger and elephant habitats of Mudumalai are among the most visited attractions. Pykara Falls and Lake, Avalanche and the Rose Garden further enrich the district's appeal.

Temples & heritage

Being a colonial-era hill retreat set amid tribal homelands, the Nilgiris is known more for its churches and natural sites than for large ancient temples. The Mariamman temple near the Ooty market, dedicated to the rain goddess, is a prominent local shrine whose April festival draws large crowds. St. Stephen's Church in Ooty, consecrated in 1830 and among the oldest churches in the Nilgiris, built partly with timber from Tipu Sultan's palace at Srirangapatna, stands as a cherished colonial heritage landmark. Smaller temples and the sacred spaces of the Toda and Badaga communities also form part of the region's spiritual fabric.

Infrastructure

The district's signature transport link is the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, connecting Mettupalayam at the foothills to Ooty via Coonoor. Ghat roads, principally NH-181 winding up from Mettupalayam through Coonoor to Ooty and onward to Gudalur, carry the bulk of road traffic. The nearest airport and major railhead is Coimbatore, roughly 60 km from Ooty, while hydroelectric stations in the Kundah and Pykara valleys supply significant power to the state grid.

Education & healthcare

The Nilgiris records a high literacy rate of 85.20 per cent (2011 Census), well above the state average. The district is renowned for heritage residential schools such as The Lawrence School, Lovedale (founded 1858) and Breeks Memorial School in Ooty, which have educated generations of students. At Wellington, the Defence Services Staff College, a premier tri-service military training institution, and the Madras Regimental Centre give the district a distinguished place in India's defence education.
