Overview

Sivaganga (Sivagangai) is a district in southern Tamil Nadu, carved out of Ramanathapuram district in 1985. It had a population of about 1.34 million at the 2011 Census over an area of roughly 4,233 sq km, with the district headquarters at Sivaganga town and Karaikudi as its largest urban centre. The district is the heart of the historic Chettinad region, home of the Nagarathar (Nattukottai Chettiar) merchant-banking community famed for their palatial mansions and distinctive cuisine. The Vaigai river crosses the district, and recent archaeological excavations at Keezhadi near the Vaigai have thrown new light on ancient Tamil urban civilisation.

Economy

The district's economy is predominantly agrarian - the vast majority of the workforce depends on farming, with paddy as the main crop alongside sugarcane, groundnut, pulses, cotton and chillies. Sugar mills such as Sakthi Sugars and EID Parry, a Britannia biscuit factory at Thiruppuvanam and chemical units operate in the district, complemented by handloom weaving and small-scale cottage industries. Karaikudi is also known for its Chettinad-linked banking legacy and, today, for heritage tourism, hospitality and Athangudi handmade tile-making.

Tourism

Sivaganga is a magnet for heritage tourism, centred on the Chettinad mansions of Kanadukathan, Karaikudi and Athangudi, with their Burma-teak pillars, Belgian-glass and imported-tile interiors and the region's celebrated cuisine. The Chettinad palace at Kanadukathan, the Athangudi tile workshops and the Chettinad heritage museum are popular stops. Nature lovers visit the Vettangudi Bird Sanctuary and Piranmalai hills, while the Keezhadi archaeological site and museum draw history enthusiasts.

Temples & heritage

The Karpaga Vinayakar temple at Pillayarpatti, a rock-cut cave shrine dating back over a thousand years, is the district's most famous temple and the traditional first shrine of the Chettinad community. Other important temples include the Kundrakudi Murugan (Shanmuganathar) temple on a hillock, the Sri Sowmiya Narayana Perumal temple at Thirukoshtiyur (a Divya Desam linked to Ramanuja) and the Kaleeswarar temple at Kalayarkovil.

Infrastructure

The district is served by railway junctions at Karaikudi and Manamadurai and by national highways linking Madurai, Tiruchirappalli, Pudukkottai and Rameswaram; the nearest airport is Madurai International, about 50 km from Sivaganga town. A disused Chettinad (Karaikudi) airstrip also lies within the district, and irrigation depends largely on the Vaigai river and a dense network of traditional tanks (ery).

Education & healthcare

Karaikudi is a notable education hub, home to Alagappa University - a state university founded by philanthropist Dr Alagappa Chettiar - and the CSIR Central Electrochemical Research Institute (CECRI), one of India's premier electrochemistry laboratories. The district also hosts engineering, arts-and-science and medical colleges, and recorded an effective literacy rate of about 79.85% at the 2011 Census.
