Southern Tamil Nadu
Theni
Headquarters: Theni
Overview
Theni is a district in the far south-west of Tamil Nadu, spread across the plains and the Western Ghats along the border with Kerala's Idukki district. Formed in 1997 by bifurcation from Madurai district, it covers about 2,868 sq km and recorded a population of 1,245,899 at the 2011 Census, with an effective literacy rate of 77.26%. The landscape is split by hill ranges into two natural divisions, embracing the fertile Cumbum Valley, the Vaigai river basin and forested Western Ghats slopes. The district is administered through five taluks, including Theni, Bodinayakanur, Periyakulam, Uthamapalayam and Andipatti, with the Theni-Allinagaram municipality as its headquarters.
Economy
Theni's economy is predominantly agricultural, with the Cumbum Valley among the very few places in Tamil Nadu that grow grapes, producing over 90,000 tonnes of Muscat and around 10,000 tonnes of seedless grapes a year. Bodinayakanur is a major spice-trading centre, so associated with the crop that it is popularly called "Cardamom City," while Kolukkumalai in the hills hosts what is described as the world's highest-altitude tea plantation. Other important crops recorded for the district include sugarcane, cotton, rice, coconut, banana, coffee and tea, feeding cotton and sugar mills and food-processing units. Small hydroelectric stations on the district's rivers add generating capacity of the order of 180 MW.
Tourism
Theni is one of Tamil Nadu's favourite hill-and-waterfall getaways, with the two-stage Suruli Falls near Cumbum among its most visited sights. The misty Meghamalai (Highwavys) hills, the sunrise viewpoint and tea estates of Kolukkumalai, and the picnic spots at Kumbakkarai Falls draw large numbers of travellers. The Vaigai Dam near Andipatti, with its gardens and evening crowds, is a popular family destination close to the district headquarters.
Temples & heritage
The district's spiritual life centres on shrines such as the Shanmuganathar (Kumbakkarai) temple, celebrated for its Thaipoosam festival, and the Kamatchi Amman temple at Devadanapatti. High in the Western Ghats stands the Mangala Devi Kannagi Temple, associated with the Tamil epic Silappadikaram and opened to pilgrims only on Chithra Pournami. Local festivals such as Pongal, Chithra Pournami and Shivarathri, along with jallikattu bull-taming events, mark the district's calendar.
Infrastructure
Theni is linked by broad-gauge railway to Madurai, with Theni among the principal stations on the Madurai-Bodinayakanur line. National and state highways connect the district to Madurai, Kumily (Kerala) and Dindigul, making it a gateway to the Periyar-Thekkady region. Irrigation and water supply depend on the Vaigai river and reservoirs such as the Vaigai, Lower Periyar, Shanmuganathi and Sothuparai dams.
Education & healthcare
Theni's public health and medical education are served by the Government Theni Medical College and Hospital. Higher education is provided by a range of arts, science and engineering colleges across Theni, Periyakulam and Bodinayakanur, most affiliated to Madurai Kamaraj University, along with polytechnic and teacher-training institutions.
