Overview
Thoothukudi (Tuticorin), popularly called the "Pearl City," is a coastal district on the Gulf of Mannar in southern Tamil Nadu, formed in 1986 by separation from Tirunelveli district. It recorded a population of 1,750,176 at the 2011 Census over an area of about 4,745 sq km, with an effective literacy rate of 86.16%, one of the highest in the state. The district is broad in the north and tapers towards the coast in the south, taking in the port city, extensive salt pans, fishing hamlets and the temple town of Tiruchendur. It is administered through three revenue divisions and ten taluks, with Thoothukudi as its municipal-corporation headquarters.
Economy
Thoothukudi is one of Tamil Nadu's most industrialised coastal districts, dominating India's salt industry by producing about 70% of Tamil Nadu's salt and roughly 30% of the national output. The V.O. Chidambaranar Port, one of India's major ports, anchors maritime trade and container traffic and supports a cluster of heavy industries including SPIC fertilizers, DCW chemicals, coal-based thermal power and copper smelting. Kovilpatti in the north-west is a long-established centre for safety matches, fireworks and the GI-tagged Kovilpatti kadalai mittai (peanut candy). Fishing, pearl and chank harvesting along the Gulf of Mannar coast, and paddy and cumbu cultivation inland, round out the district economy.
Tourism
The district's best-known landmark is the seashore temple of Tiruchendur, but it also offers a striking coastal and heritage circuit. The Basilica of Our Lady of Snows in Thoothukudi is a major Roman Catholic pilgrimage centre, while the golden expanses of the salt pans at sunset are an unusual sight for visitors. Beaches and coastal spots such as Manapad, along with the sculptural cave temples at Kalugumalai further inland, add to the district's appeal.
Temples & heritage
The Arulmigu Subramaniya Swamy Temple at Tiruchendur is one of the Arupadai Veedu, the six sacred abodes of Lord Murugan, and the only one situated on the seashore, famed for its towering nine-storey gopuram beside the Bay of Bengal. Inland, the rock-cut Kalugumalai Jain beds and the Kalugasalamoorthy (Murugan) temple carved into a single hill are notable early-medieval monuments. The district also has a strong Christian heritage, reflected in the historic churches of Thoothukudi and Manapad.
Infrastructure
Thoothukudi is served by the V.O. Chidambaranar (Tuticorin) Port, an airport at Vagaikulam offering flights to Chennai and Bengaluru, and railway stations at Thoothukudi and Kovilpatti. National and state highways link the district to Tirunelveli, Madurai and the coast. A second national spaceport is being developed by ISRO near Kulasekarapattinam, chosen for its proximity to the equator for launching smaller rockets.
Education & healthcare
Higher education in the district is led by V.O. Chidambaram College, one of the oldest colleges in the region, and a network of arts, science and engineering colleges affiliated to Manonmaniam Sundaranar University. Medical and technical education are provided by the Thoothukudi Government Medical College and Anna University's regional campus, alongside fisheries and maritime training institutions on the coast.
