Overview

Tiruppur is a district in western Tamil Nadu, within the Kongu Nadu region, formed on 22 February 2009 out of parts of the erstwhile Coimbatore and Erode districts. Its headquarters, Tiruppur city, is the knitwear capital of India and a leading cotton knitwear and garment export centre, popularly nicknamed "Dollar City". Located roughly 50-60 km east of Coimbatore, the district recorded a population of 2,479,052 in the 2011 Census across an area of 5,187 sq km, with an effective literacy rate of about 78.68 percent. It blends a heavily industrialised, highly urbanised textile economy with agricultural tracts along the Noyyal and Amaravathi rivers.

Economy

Tiruppur is home to India's largest knitwear and cotton garment export cluster, with thousands of manufacturing, hosiery, dyeing, bleaching, printing and embroidery units concentrated in and around the city. According to the Tiruppur Exporters' Association (TEA), garment exports from the cluster were valued at about ₹44,747 crore (roughly US$5.4 billion) in 2024-25, and Tiruppur accounts for a very large share of India's total knitwear exports. Beyond textiles, the district has substantial wind-power generation and a strong agricultural base. Rural Tiruppur is well known for the Kangayam breed of draught cattle (Kangayam bulls) and for Uthukuli butter.

Tourism

The district's main attractions lie in its western hills and reservoirs. The Amaravathi Dam and reservoir near Udumalpet, at the foot of the Western Ghats, adjoins the Amaravathi Crocodile Farm (established 1976), one of India's largest captive-breeding centres for mugger crocodiles. Nearby, the Thirumoorthy Hills, Thirumoorthy Dam and the Thirumoorthy (Panchalinga) waterfalls near Udumalpet draw trekkers and pilgrims, while the Dhali and Udumalpet belt borders the Indira Gandhi (Anaimalai) Wildlife Sanctuary and National Park.

Temples & heritage

The district's best-known shrine is the ancient Avinashilingeswarar (Avinashiappar) Shiva temple at Avinashi, one of the Tevaram-hymned Shaiva temples of the Kongu region. Other important temples include the Muruganathaswamy (Murugan) temple at Thirumurugan Poondi near Avinashi and the Sivanmalai Murugan temple, along with numerous Perumal and Amman temples across Dharapuram, Kangeyam and Tiruppur city.

Infrastructure

Tiruppur is well connected by rail and road: Tiruppur railway station (code TUP) on the Chennai–Coimbatore line under the Salem division handles heavy passenger and freight traffic, and National Highway 544 (the Salem–Kochi highway) passes through Tiruppur and Avinashi, linking the district to Coimbatore and Erode. The nearest airport is Coimbatore International Airport, about 40–50 km away. Industrial and municipal water needs are served by the pioneering New Tirupur Area Development Corporation (NTADCL) public–private water-supply scheme.

Education & healthcare

The district has a wide range of higher-education institutions, including engineering and arts-and-science colleges in and around Tiruppur, Udumalpet, Avinashi, Dharapuram and Kangeyam. Government-run institutions such as Government Arts College, Udumalpet and Government Arts and Science College, Avinashi operate alongside private engineering, arts, science and textile-technology colleges that serve the region's knitwear and garment industry.
