Overview

Tiruvallur (Thiruvallur) is a district in the north-east corner of Tamil Nadu, wrapping around the northern and western edges of Chennai and reaching up to the Andhra Pradesh border and the Bay of Bengal. At the 2011 Census the then-undivided district recorded a population of 3,728,104 over an area of about 3,394 sq km, with an effective literacy rate of 84.03%; a 2018-2021 reorganisation later transferred some southern areas towards Chennai. Part of the Chennai Metropolitan Area, its eastern tracts are heavily urban and industrial while the northern belt retains a rural, Telugu-influenced character. The district is administered through three revenue divisions and nine taluks, with Avadi as a municipal corporation and Tiruvallur town as headquarters.

Economy

Tiruvallur is one of Tamil Nadu's fastest-industrialising districts, hosting a major automobile, engineering and petrochemical belt north of Chennai. Its industrial base includes the Kamarajar (Ennore) Port, the North Chennai Thermal Power Station and NTPC units, the Chennai Petroleum (CPCL) Manali refinery complex, the Heavy Vehicles Factory at Avadi and the Kattupalli shipyard, supported by around 16,940 small-scale units and nine industrial estates. According to district economy data, Tiruvallur's per-capita income reached about ₹4.31 lakh in 2022-23, with a nominal district output on the order of ₹1.71 lakh crore. Agriculture, focused on paddy along with textiles, chemicals and leather, remains significant in the rural north.

Tourism

Tiruvallur combines temple pilgrimage with coastal and lagoon landscapes close to Chennai. Pulicat Lake, India's second-largest brackish-water lagoon, and the nearby bird sanctuaries draw nature lovers, especially in the migratory season. The Poondi reservoir (Sathyamoorthy Sagar), a key source of Chennai's drinking water, and the hill shrine at Tiruttani are popular day-trip destinations for the metropolitan region.

Temples & heritage

The Subramaniya Swamy Temple at Tiruttani, atop a hill reached by 365 steps, is the fifth of the Arupadai Veedu, the six sacred abodes of Lord Murugan, and one of the district's foremost pilgrimage centres. In the district headquarters stands the Veeraraghava Swamy (Vaidhya Veeraraghava Perumal) Temple, dedicated to Vishnu and counted among the 108 Divya Desams, from which the town takes its name. Together with numerous local Shiva and Amman shrines, these temples make Tiruvallur an important devotional circuit on Chennai's outskirts.

Infrastructure

Tiruvallur is deeply integrated into Chennai's transport and industrial infrastructure, with the Kamarajar Port at Ennore, suburban rail lines and the Chennai-Kolkata and Chennai-Bengaluru rail and highway corridors passing through it. Power is generated at the North Chennai and Ennore thermal stations and NTPC units, while the Manali industrial cluster hosts refineries and petrochemical plants. The Poondi and Cholavaram reservoirs and the Telugu Ganga scheme are vital to the water supply of both the district and Chennai city.

Education & healthcare

The district hosts several large private universities, including Vel Tech Rangarajan Dr. Sagunthala R&D Institute, Saveetha University and St. Peter's University, along with numerous engineering and arts colleges around Avadi and Poonamallee. The Heavy Vehicles Factory at Avadi and other defence establishments also run specialised training institutions, and government arts and science colleges serve the district's towns.
