Northern Tamil Nadu
Tiruvannamalai
Headquarters: Tiruvannamalai
Overview
Tiruvannamalai is a district in northern Tamil Nadu that ranks among the state's most venerated Saivite pilgrimage centres, anchored by the towering Arunachaleswarar (Annamalaiyar) temple at the foot of the sacred Annamalai hill. Pilgrims from across South India undertake the 14-kilometre Girivalam, a barefoot circumambulation of the hill on full-moon days, while the annual Karthigai Deepam festival draws vast crowds to witness the great beacon lit atop the peak. The district was carved out of the erstwhile North Arcot district on 30 September 1989 and takes its headquarters from the temple town of Tiruvannamalai. Predominantly agrarian, it is watered by numerous tanks and reservoirs and is home to the spiritual legacy of Sri Ramana Maharshi. It ranks among the largest districts in Tamil Nadu by area.
Economy
The economy of Tiruvannamalai is rooted in agriculture, with paddy as the leading crop irrigated by an extensive network of tanks and reservoirs, alongside sugarcane, groundnut and other cereals and pulses. The pilgrimage and temple economy is a major livelihood generator, sustaining hospitality, retail, flower and pooja trades, and transport around the Arunachaleswarar temple and Girivalam. The nearby town of Arni is renowned for its silk and handloom weaving, producing prized Arni silk sarees, while granite quarrying and dairying add to the rural economy. Agro-processing including rice milling and sugar production, along with small manufacturing units, supports local employment.
Tourism
Tourism in Tiruvannamalai revolves around the grand Arunachaleswarar temple and the sacred Annamalai hill, with the 14-kilometre Girivalam circumambulation and the spectacular Karthigai Deepam festival drawing pilgrims year-round. The Sri Ramana Maharshi Ashram at the foot of the hill attracts seekers from India and abroad. Beyond the temple town, visitors are drawn to the Sathanur Dam and its gardens on the Thenpennai (South Pennar) river, the scenic Jawadhu Hills, and the Beeman (Beemanmadavu) waterfalls. Historic monuments in towns such as Arni and Vandavasi add to the district's heritage appeal.
Temples & heritage
The Arunachaleswarar (Annamalaiyar) temple is the district's spiritual heart, one of the largest Shiva temples in India and the Pancha Bhoota Sthalam representing the element of fire (Agni), where the lingam is worshipped as the Agni Lingam. Revered in the 7th-century Tevaram hymns of Sambandar and Appar, it is counted among the 276 Paadal Petra Sthalams of the Tamil Saiva canon and is famed for its soaring gopurams and thousand-pillared hall. The sacred Annamalai hill is itself regarded as a manifestation of Shiva, and devotees undertake the Girivalam route around it, which is lined with lingams and shrines venerated during the circumambulation. The district also holds ancient Jain heritage sites at Tirumalai and Seeyamangalam.
Infrastructure
Tiruvannamalai town lies on the Villupuram-Katpadi (Vellore) railway line and is linked by state and national highways to Chennai, Vellore, Bengaluru and other regional centres. An extensive road network connects the district's taluks and pilgrimage routes, with regular bus services supporting the heavy pilgrim traffic during Girivalam and Karthigai Deepam. The Sathanur Dam on the Thenpennai river provides irrigation to a large command area, supplementing the district's many tanks and reservoirs.
Education & healthcare
Tiruvannamalai district is served by a range of higher-education institutions, including arts and science colleges such as the Government Arts College at Tiruvannamalai (established 1966), engineering colleges, and polytechnic and teacher-training institutions. The Government Tiruvannamalai Medical College and Hospital, established in 2013, provides MBBS and postgraduate medical education along with tertiary healthcare for the region. A network of government, aided and private schools supports school education across the district's taluks.
