Overview
Tiruvarur (officially Thiruvarur) is a district in the heart of the Cauvery delta in Tamil Nadu, celebrated as one of the state's principal 'rice bowls'. It was formed on 1 January 1997 when it was carved out of the erstwhile Thanjavur district, and covers an area of about 2,274 sq km with a population of 1,264,277 as per the 2011 Census. The district is a fountainhead of Tamil cultural and musical heritage, being the birthplace of the saint-composer Thyagaraja (Tyagaraja), one of the Carnatic music 'Trinity', and a revered centre of temple and Bharatanatyam traditions. Its landscape of paddy fields, irrigation canals and ancient temples makes it both an agrarian and a spiritual landmark of the delta region.
Economy
Tiruvarur's economy is predominantly agrarian, anchored by paddy cultivation that ranks it among Tamil Nadu's leading rice-producing delta districts, fed by the waters of the Cauvery and its distributary canals. The 2011 Census recorded tens of thousands of cultivators and a very large body of agricultural labourers, underlining farming as the primary livelihood. Alongside agriculture, traditional handloom weaving remains an important cottage industry, while fisheries thrive along the coastal and lagoon belt around Muthupet. Temple towns such as Thiruvarur and Mannargudi also support a significant pilgrimage and services economy.
Tourism
The district's foremost attraction is the ancient Thyagaraja (Thiyagarajaswamy) Temple at Thiruvarur, renowned for its giant temple chariot (ther) and the vast Kamalalayam temple tank, one of the largest in India. The magnificent Sri Rajagopalaswamy Temple at Mannargudi draws Vaishnava pilgrims to its sprawling complex and Haridra Nadi tank. Nature lovers head to the Muthupet lagoon with its coastal mangrove forests, as well as the Vaduvoor and Udhayamarthandapuram bird sanctuaries. Together these sites make Tiruvarur a hub of temple, festival and eco-tourism.
Temples & heritage
Tiruvarur is one of Tamil Nadu's great temple districts. The Thyagaraja Temple at Thiruvarur, a major Shaivite shrine, possesses the largest temple chariot (ther) in Tamil Nadu and the enormous Kamalalayam tank; its annual Aazhi Ther chariot festival is among the biggest in Asia. Mannargudi's Sri Rajagopalaswamy Temple is one of the most important Vaishnava temples of the delta, often called 'Dakshina Dwaraka'. Other notable shrines across the district include the Panchanadeeswarar Temple, the Nellivananathar (Nellikadu) Temple at Thiruvarur, and the Rathnapureeswarar Temple.
Infrastructure
Tiruvarur town is an important railway junction connecting the delta districts, with lines radiating towards Thanjavur, Nagapattinam, Tiruthuraipoondi and Karaikkal. A dense network of state highways and district roads links its towns across the flat delta terrain. Irrigation is sustained by an extensive system of Cauvery distributary canals and river channels, while the district's proximity to Thanjavur and Nagapattinam integrates it into the wider delta transport and market network.
Education & healthcare
Higher education in the district is anchored by the Central University of Tamil Nadu, a central government institution headquartered at Neelakudi, Thiruvarur. The district is also served by a range of government and aided arts and science colleges, teacher-training and polytechnic institutions, and engineering colleges in towns such as Thiruvarur, Mannargudi and Needamangalam, in addition to a wide network of government schools.
