Overview

Vellore is a district in the north-eastern part of Tamil Nadu, headquartered in the historic fort city of Vellore on the banks of the Palar river. In Census 2011 the undivided district recorded a population of about 3.94 million; in 2019 it was trifurcated, with Ranipet and Tirupathur carved out, leaving a present-day district of roughly 1.6 million people. The district is best known for the 16th-century Vellore Fort, its leather-tanning belt and the Christian Medical College (CMC), one of India's foremost hospitals. Administered under the Smart Cities Mission, Vellore remains a major education, healthcare and industrial centre of northern Tamil Nadu.

Economy

Vellore's economy rests on leather and agriculture. The wider Vellore leather belt — historically including Ambur, Vaniyambadi and Ranipet — is one of India's leading tanning and leather-goods clusters and contributes a large share of the country's leather exports. Agriculture supports paddy, pulses, sugarcane and millets across the Palar basin, while Ranipet's SIPCOT estates host heavy engineering, boiler and automobile-component units. Healthcare and education, anchored by CMC and VIT, are themselves major economic drivers, drawing patients and students from across India.

Tourism

The 16th-century Vellore Fort, with its granite ramparts and wide moat, is the district's landmark and uniquely houses a temple, a mosque and a church within its walls. The Sripuram Golden Temple at Thirumalaikodi, sheathed in around 1,500 kg of gold foil, draws pilgrims from across the country. Other attractions include the Jalakandeswarar Temple inside the fort and the Yelagiri hill station in the adjoining uplands.

Temples & heritage

The Jalakandeswarar Temple, a 16th-century Vijayanagara shrine set within Vellore Fort, is celebrated for its intricate stone carvings and monolithic pillars. The Sri Lakshmi Narayani (Sripuram) Golden Temple, spread over about 100 acres, is one of the world's largest gold-covered temples. Together they make Vellore a notable centre of temple architecture and pilgrimage.

Infrastructure

Vellore lies on National Highway 48 (the Chennai–Bengaluru corridor) and is served by the Katpadi and Vellore Cantonment railway junctions, key stops on the Chennai–Bengaluru line. The district is anchored by CMC Vellore, a globally recognised tertiary-care hospital, and was selected under the national Smart Cities Mission for urban upgrades.

Education & healthcare

Vellore is a major education hub, home to VIT (Vellore Institute of Technology), one of India's top private universities, and the Christian Medical College, among the country's leading medical schools. Thiruvalluvar University, headquartered in Vellore, coordinates arts and science colleges across the region.
